A corn farmer in Barangay Imelda, Ubay, Bohol has achieved a high yield of 4.07 metric tons per hectare using a hybrid yellow corn variety.
Carmelita Cadornega planted GW777 Hybrid Yellow Corn, a conventional hybrid developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.
The yield performance of Mrs. Cadornega’s corn was determined by a Crop-Cut Yield Survey conducted by the Corn-Section of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) on October 17, 2023.
The survey was attended by Provincial Agriculturist Liza M. Quirog, MNSA and the Corn Technician of MLGU- Ubay, Crispina Caballero.
The Crop-Cut Yield Survey is a method of estimating the yield of corn per hectare by randomly selecting and harvesting a representative sample area of the field. The harvested ears are then weighed and converted to shelled corn equivalent.
According to Ms. Quirog, the survey aims to validate the yield potential of different corn varieties and to provide feedback to the farmers on their crop management practices.
She said the OPA is promoting the use of hybrid corn varieties as part of its efforts to increase corn production and income of farmers in Bohol.
Mrs. Cadornega said she was satisfied with the performance of GW777 Hybrid Yellow Corn, which she planted for the first time this season.
She said she followed the recommended fertilizer application and pest control measures for the variety. She also thanked the OPA and MLGU- Ubay for their technical assistance and support.
GW777 Hybrid Yellow Corn is one of the corn varieties recommended by the Department of Agriculture for planting in Bohol.
It is suitable for rainfed and irrigated areas, and has good resistance to drought, pests, and diseases. It has a potential yield of 8 to 10 metric tons per hectare under optimum conditions.
