Authorities are urging residents of Bohol to learn how to keep themselves safe in the event of a disaster by moving to evacuation sites, amid concerns over increased activity at active faults offshore.
Experts warn that the island is at risk of strong earthquakes similar to the one that struck in 2013, and are advising residents to practice mass evacuation drills as a precautionary measure.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has been monitoring a series of earthquakes along faults found offshore in Bohol, including the east Bohol fault, which has been causing recent tremors.
While earthquakes are unpredictable natural disasters, experts say that preparedness can help avert mass casualties.
"We cannot predict when and where earthquakes will occur, but we can prepare for them," said a PHIVOLCS official.
Residents are being advised to familiarize themselves with evacuation routes and procedures, and to stay informed about the latest developments on fault activity in the area.
The call for preparedness comes as the Philippines marks the anniversary of the 2013 earthquake that struck Bohol, killing over 200 people and causing widespread destruction.
