The death of a nurse in an act of violence at a hospital in Bohol province has prompted calls for greater protection of healthcare workers in the Philippines.
The Philippine Nurses Association – Bohol Chapter issued a statement mourning "the tragic loss of our colleague, a dedicated nurse whose life was senselessly taken by an act of violence within the hospital."
Marjorie Jabines Visarra-Abuyen, a nurse at Bohol Doctors Hospital in Bool, Tagbilaran City, was fatally stabbed several times last Thursday by an alleged drug user patient identified as Marlito Cardines Linguis, of Sevilla, Bohol.
The association urged "a swift and thorough investigation to ensure accountability and a safer environment for all healthcare workers."
ACE Medical Center – Bohol, Inc. also released a statement condemning the incident, declaring "no one in the healthcare workforce deserves violence in all its forms."
The hospital expressed condolences to the family of "one of our sisters in the healthcare community who dedicated her life to serve as a NURSE."
Both organizations called for an end to violence against nurses and healthcare workers.
The incident has sparked a social media campaign using hashtags like #WeStandAsOneAgainstViolenceTowardHealthcareWorkers.
