A devastating loss has sparked a call to action in Bohol, where a young girl’s life was cut short after a poisonous snake bite.
The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) is now considering plans to stock anti-venom serum in district hospitals to prevent similar tragedies.
The move comes after observers urged the PGBh to take action, citing the need for readily available cures for snake bite victims.
Currently, only two hospitals in Bohol, the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center and Del Valle Hospital in Ubay, have stocks of anti-venom.
The recent death of the young girl, who was bitten by a poisonous snake in her home, reveals the urgency of the situation.
The snake bite victim was taken to a hospital in Loon, which did not have any anti-venom on hand, and was only transferred to Gallares Hospital 24 hours later. By then, it was too late, and the lack of immediate treatment proved fatal.
In a radio interview, Dr. Em Uy of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) revealed that the governor has given the green light to acquire anti-venom stocks for the district hospitals. The serum will be sourced from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
The PGBh’s plan to stock anti-venom in district hospitals is a crucial step towards preventing similar tragedies in the future.
