A majority of mayors in Bohol, under instruction of Gov. Aris Aumentado, expressed support for awarding a franchise to More Power to manage the power distribution in the province’s towns, currently operated by two Bohol Electric Cooperatives (BOHECO), reports have surfaced.
The mayors, who attended a meeting on the sidelines of the League of Municipalities Visayas Island cluster congress at Shangri-La Manila last week, are urging Congress to grant More Power the franchise.
According to Dauis Mayor Roman Bullen, who attended the meeting, the mayors saw the gathering as an opportunity to discuss the issue, as many of them were already in Manila for the LMP congress.
The move comes after mayors from the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) criticized the performance of the cooperatives, particularly BOHECO 2, last month.
Buenavista Mayor Dave Duallo led the criticism, citing high electricity bills and frequent brownouts in his town, which is served by BOHECO 2.
BOHECO 2 has attributed the fluctuations in electricity bills to changing rates from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and problems with telecommunications companies causing intermittent power interruptions.
The meeting was also attended by some senatorial aspirants who took the opportunity to pitch their respective candidacies to the mayors.
