OPA seeks extension for free use of groundwater survey equipment

Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog has confirmed that her office has requested an extension for the free use of a georesistivity survey machine by people’s organizations.

She made this announcement during her appearance on Newsmakers ug Uban Pa on October 3, 2024, hosted by Ardy Araneta-Batoy of DYTR.

The machine, a ground-penetrating radar, is instrumental in identifying groundwater sources and aquifers, Quirog explained. It can determine the depth and feasibility of tapping into water sources for irrigation purposes, thereby potentially aiding in the irrigation of vegetable gardens or providing potable water.

Quirog noted that some organizations were unable to utilize the machine’s free service before the moratorium on fees expired in August. Without an extension, users would have to pay a rental fee of P20,000.

"We have requested Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado to extend the fee moratorium for the rental of this device," Quirog said. "This will enable us to serve all interested people’s organizations who wish to benefit from the machine’s services."

A formal request will be submitted soon after the Technical Working Group concludes its meeting regarding the extension of the free use program.

In other efforts, Quirog’s office is also supporting vegetable growers to boost production, aiming to increase supply and ultimately help reduce vegetable prices.

Several towns in the third district have been identified as potential members of a vegetable corridor initiative.
